Qi Gong is the skill and practice of cultivating, balancing and accessing our vital life energy, known as Qi. The term combines two Chinese characters:

Qi  氣  combines the character for rice (米) with the radical for vapour, steam or air (气). Steam rising off a pot of cooking rice may have been taken as tangible sign of the invisible energy of Qi acting on and transforming matter. Possibly the character first signified no more than the awareness that the air we breath and the food we eat are principle sources of life energy.

Gong 功  refers to gong fu (or Kung Fu), skill or ability acquired over time by means of effort and perseverance. It is the path to achieving ability, a method or even a form of play.

Traditionally, Qi Gong was practiced for one of three basic purposes: (1) as a means to health and longevity, (2) as a meditative practice for self-realization and cultivation, (3) as a method for developing internal power in the martial arts. These three approaches continue into the present and, in some traditions, are deeply interconnected in practice.

Eight Piece Brocade (Ba Duan Jin) 八段錦

This is one of the oldest and most widely practiced Qi Gong sets in the Chinese tradition. Purportedly created by the Song Dynasty general, Yue Fei (1103-1142AD), as a means of strengthening his troops and healing their injuries after battle, the Eight Piece Brocade has been continuously practiced for a 1000 years.

A brocade is a richly patterned garment, often woven of silk or some other fine thread. The eight pieces of this wonderful Qi Gong form interweave to create a connected pattern of health maintenance and energy enhancement that can sustain you for life.

The Eight Pieces of this magnificent Qi Gong form use holding postures and smooth transitions to help open up our bodies, release blockages in our energy meridians, strengthen the tendons ligaments and muscle fibers, and even improve the functioning of the internal organs.

"Practice this form with diligence and hundreds of illnesses disappear... The Eight Pieces get rid of sickness and eliminate Disasters."
